Geneva has over 200 libraries with approximately 8.3 million books on international, scientific, and various specialised topics, many of which are written in English.

To borrow English-languages books in Geneva, contact one of the libraries suggested below:

The Library in English -
Opened in 1930, this English-language lending library has about 12 000 books, including best-sellers, books for children, and audio books on CD.

There are municipal libraries in practically every city neighbourhood. These lending and reference libraries provide a selection of books, magazines, and newspapers in English and many other languages, for adults and children.

The largest municipal library in downtown Geneva is the Bibliothèque de la Cité, which offers not just books, but also multiple digital and multimedia services.

The Geneva Library and its affiliates play an essential role in preserving Geneva’s cultural heritage and making it readily available to the local and international community.

The English-language library at the University of Geneva contains many English-language monographs and periodicals, with an emphasis on literary and cultural studies.

Bibliothèque du Centre d'Art Contemporain Genè
Collection of documents dealing with 20th century art, especially the period from 1950 to the present day. For reference only, no loans.

The Art and History Museum's Art and Archaeology Library and Media Centre contains textual, graphic and audio-visual records related to arts, numismatics, horology, archaeology and architecture.


Ideally situated in Geneva’s Rue de la Confédération, the Payot Rive Gauche bookshop offers, in a spacious, and welcoming environment, a large selection of English-language books and cultural products with a helpful English-speaking staff at your service. A smaller selection of English-language items is on sale at the Payot Cornavin bookshop at the Geneva train station.
