Activities for English speakers

The following web pages contain a directory of cultural activities which can be enjoyed by English-speakers without any knowledge of French.

Just one click away is everything you need to know about a variety of purely visual presentations— dance, performance art, circus, together with all theatre and cinema productions showing in English. You will also find a listing of exhibitions and collections accompanied by English-language commentaries. And do not forget to look in on the City of Geneva and its neighbourhood events.

Visual Entertainement

This is a listing of festivals and places of entertainment giving performances that may be enjoyed by those not fluent in French—primarily visual entertainment such as dance, opera, multimedia presentations, and circus.

Opera

Geneva’s Grand Théâtre – www.geneveopera.com
This vast performing arts centre, the largest in French Switzerland, provides an annual season of world-standard opera and music recitals, together with two to three, choreographic productions by the Grand Theatre Ballet. Most of these performances offer bilingual, French/English surtitling.

Le Bâtiment des forces motrices, the Power Station Building, a masterly transformation of disused industrial plant, has become an popular venue for the performing arts and special events.    

Association pour la danse contemporaine (ADC) - www.adc-geneve.ch
The Association exists to promote contemporary dance in Geneva and each season presents about 15 productions by in-house and guest performers.

Théâtre du Galpon - www.galpon.ch
The Galpon Theatre presents diverse forms of stage-craft—marionette theatre, dance, and sound productions from the four corners of the earth.

In a contemporary glass and grey-brick building, Meyrin’s Forum Theatre presents a varied programme of dance, music, and circus performances, together with exhibitions.

Subtitled plays
New! Some theaters in Geneva propose French plays with English subtitles. Originally conceived for people with hearing problems, the subtitles are now adapted for English speaking people.

Films

Geneva is well endowed with cinemas www.cine.ch. Most foreign films are screened in their original version with subtitles in French, which makes for a large number showing in English. In addition, if you would like to rent movies in English or explore open-air and other more off-beat cinemas, just go to one of the links below.

On Monday evenings, from September to June, the University Cinema Club shows a series of rare and not so rare film classics by outstanding directors.

During February, the Museum will be showing a series of documentaries that can be easily followed by non-French-speakers.

Festival du Film et Forum International sur les Droits Humains (FIFDH) www.fifdh.org - March
The International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) was inaugurated in 2003. The inspiration and impetus behind the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights came from human rights defenders active in NGO's, filmmakers, media representatives and the University of Geneva. The FIFDH coincides with the UN Human Rights Council's main session. This simultaneous event makes the Festival a Free Platform for discussion and debates on a wide variety of topics concerning human rights.

Animatou is a festival dedicated to bringing the best of Swiss and international animation to spectators of all ages and promoting an awareness of art films rarely screened in commercial cinemas.

Founded in 1995, The Geneva International Fiction Film Festival, Tous Ecrans, has been breaking through audiovisual barriers year after year. By programming works made for cinema, television, the web, mobile phones and video games, the festival celebrates international film-makers and artists across the screens. The festival draws its programme from a full spectrum of audiovisual practices and in so doing reflects the dreams and doubts of today's multicultural and connected society.

Dedicated to video arts, the media centre constitutes a research and reference learning resource. It is equipped with four individual work stations, an adaptable screening area, and a specialised library.

Museums and Exhibitions 

Geneva is home to numerous public and private museums, art centres and galleries, all striving to outdo each other not only in the sophistication of their displays but also in the acquisition, conservation, and researching of their outstanding exhibits.

Let the City and its incomparable setting of lake and mountains unfold before you, by taking a walk round the lakeside from the Botanical Gardens and the Perle du Lac, across the Mont Blanc Bridge, past the Ile Rousseau, the Floral Clock and the Water Spout to the beautiful rose gardens in the Parc de la Grange and the Parc des Eaux-Vives.
